God is Powerful

Topic:

Life & Living (Friendship, Trust, Choices)

Theme:

God helps us when things are tough.

Plan:

Introduction

We are thinking about the word powerful today. We think super heroes are powerful. They have different strengths. So we are going to find the most powerful people in school today.

Game

Super Strong – ask for a volunteer to come and arm wrestle one of the team. Make out that you're trying hard but lose. Keep the person up front.

Super Smart – Display on the screen a sentence that has missing letters. We used 26 L of the A. Answer: 26 letters of the alphabet. Get the winner up front.

Super Brave – Make a box with a whole in each end. One end has to be secretive in which you place your hand. Get a volunteer out who thinks they are super brave. Hold the box so the person can’t see that you have your hand in one end. “Egg” person on as to what’s in the box – spiders, snakes, gunge as they go to put their hand in the box to feel what’s in it. Scare them by shouting and making the box jump. Keep the person up front.

Story

Mark 4 35 – 40. Use the script below to tell the story. It requires everyone’s involvement. You could try making a cardboard cut out boat or use an inflatable boat to tell the story from.

From the volunteers selected they play the follow parts:

Jesus – Someone older as they read the lines in capital letters.
Thunder – they shout boom when ever thunder is mentioned.
Lightening – the shout flash when they hear the word lightening spoken.
Everyone else – practise making rain sounds start quietly by tapping fingers then clapping then tapping knees.

Explain how they need to follow instructions. They important thing to remember is when Jesus says "Be still!" the rain noise stops.

It was a perfect day, the sky was blue and the lake was calm. A gentle breeze whipped the wave tips white and foamy.

Jesus sat at the side of the lake and talked to the people about God. God is your father, he said. He dresses the flowers in beautiful colours. He makes sure the birds have enough to eat. But you are his sons and daughters. Don’t you think he can clothe and feed you too? So trust him and stop worrying your lives away.

When Jesus had finished teaching he was tired. So he called his closest friends and together they piled into a boat and set off across the lake for home.

Jesus yawned and stretched. He laid his head down and to the rhythm of the waves and the rocking of the boat he fell asleep. It was the perfect end to a perfect day!

And then suddenly the day was not so perfect. The sky turned black. The lake too
And a wild wind stirred the waves up tall and stormy.

(Start rain sound and increase/decrease as needed)

The boat rocked right, the boat rocked left. The boat rocked up and down. The storm got bigger; there was thunder (Boom) and lightening (Flash). And even more thunder (Boom) and even bigger lightening (Flash). And the rain came down harder and harder. And there was thunder (Boom) and Lightening (Flash). The boat rocked so hard in fact, that Jesus’ friends were sure they would all drown.

But Jesus slept right through it – except for the odd snuffle and snore.

Jesus his friends called at last Jesus! Wake up! We are all going to drown!

Jesus woke up. Jesus stood up! And in a loud voice said to the wind and waves,

“BE STILL”

And they did. Then Jesus turned to his friends and said

YOU DIDN’T NEED TO BE FRIGHTENED. YOU DIDN’T HAVE TO WORRY. ALL YOU HAD TO DO WAS TRUST ME. SEE EVERYTHING IS CALM.

And so it was. The sky was blue. The lake was calm. And the little waves splashed happily at the side of the boat. It was a perfect day, again.

Thought

God helped these people when they were in trouble. As a Christian I believe that any one of us can still ask God for help when we are in tricky situations. Maybe you are having a difficult time at school or home. Maybe homework is hard – you can ask God for help. He’s so powerful even the wind and waves obey him.

Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Song

My God is so big, so strong and so mighty
There's nothing that He cannot do
My God is so big, so strong and so mighty
There's nothing that He cannot do

The rivers are His, the mountains are His
The stars are His handiwork too
My God is so big, so strong and so mighty
There's nothing that He cannot do

[Close with a short prayer or reflection.]
