Life Unravelling

Topic:

Life & Living (Friendship, Trust, Choices)

Theme:

Don't worry!

Plan:

Game: Toilet Swizzle

Materials: 3x Toilet Roll

Ask for three volunteers. Give each a roll of toilet paper. Their challenge is to unroll the toilet roll using only one hand, they must keep hold it (they cannot roll it on the floor for example), they can use the rest of their body to help. Putting their finger in the cardboard roll and spinning works best. Either do the first to unroll or set a time limit.

Give a prize to the winner.

Thought

Materials: Pre-prepared toilet roll with words and verse written on.

Life can be full of worries, and sometimes it can feel like it’s all going wrong, like life is unraveling before our eyes. It might seem like you can’t stop the worries spinning around in your mind, and one worry leads on to another worry. The more you worry the more in unravels.

It’s a little like this toilet roll. If I unravel it we can see some of the worries that unfold, things you might be worried about. (Start to unravel the toilet roll to reveal different worries, eg. Exams, family, moving schools, friends, bullying, ward, death etc, until you get to the Bible verse.)

But I believe worry doesn’t help. There’s an old phrase saying worry is like a rocking chair, it gives us something to do but doesn’t get us anywhere. The Bible also tells us not to worry.

(Reveal Matthew 6:34 on the roll)

We could spend all our time worrying, but it doesn’t do us any good, it won’t make us feel better about the present or the future.

We need to be hoping, look forward and seeing what good things might happen, focussing on all those positive things. (Unravel things of hope)

I know there will be times when you’ll struggle to ignore the worry but speak to a friend you trust, or family or teachers. They will want to help you look forward to the good things and help you through the things that are worrying you.

Final reflection

- What kinds of things are playing on your mind?
- Who do you have around you to help you out of the worry trap?
